Reframe/Refocus -  Preserving Miami’s Cultural Memory

Launched in 2018, WAAM’s Reframe/Refocus program brings Miami’s cultural history to the forefront by digitizing and preserving artists’ studio archives. These collections document not only the creative contributions of women and non-binary artists across South Florida, but also reflect the broader cultural and social history of the communities they are part of. Within these archives are sketches, photographs, correspondence, and recordings that reveal how artists gathered, collaborated, and built networks of support—creating the rich social ecosystems that have long sustained Miami’s creative life.

To date, WAAM has worked closely with over twenty artists to preserve and share their histories through Reframe/Refocus. These digitized collections are invaluable primary sources that contribute to the larger story of American contemporary art, while also celebrating the distinct regional developments that make South Florida’s art scene so vital. By safeguarding these histories and making them publicly accessible, WAAM ensures that Miami’s cultural legacy remains a living, visible, and essential chapter of the broader narrative of American art.
